thieves oil

One of my favorite things about essential oils (aside from how awesome they are) is the history behind them. Humans have utilized the power of oils for thousands of years. Can you imagine, that long ago, mothers using the same blends for their children? The ability to heal your own children is wonderful. It’s such an empowering feeling to know that you can aid those you love without having to race them to a physician at all hours. (Especially true if, like mine, the worst of times happens in the dead of night.) Thieves oil is the number one blend in my home arsenal: I use it on almost a daily basis.

The folklore behind this blend is fun. For example, allegedly, the original blend was created to ward off the Plague during the Middle Ages. Some people claim the corpse-raiding “thieves” who robbed the bodies of the dead used this to keep away from illnesses or curses. The oil is a blend of local herbs, mixed with oil or vinegar and used either as a body rub or as a soak for fabric masks. The immune-boosting properties helps ward off disease. Today, we can find scientific backing that many of these herbs do promote healthy immune systems. Multiple companies sell a variation of “Thieves,” “Four Thieves,” etc.

My own blend varies depending on the use and time of year. I always, always include clove, lemon, and rosemary. All three are fantastic immune boosters with anti-bacterial properties. I add additional oils depending on if I’m using the oil as a cleaner, a diffuser, or as a rollerball.

My Basic Thieves Oil Blend

This makes about 2oz. I keep my oil in a dropper bottle (I like blue bottles like the ones you can find here). You will need essential oils of the following:

  • 3 1/2 tsp Clove (my favorite here)
  • 3 1/4 tsp Lemon (my favorite here)
  • 1 tsp Rosemary (my favorite here)
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon Bark (my favorite here)
  • 1 1/2 tsp Eucalyptus (my favorite here)
  • 1/4 tsp Melaleuca/Tea Tree (my favorite here)

Combine all oils in the dropper. I let mine sit for at least a full day before I use it because the oils marinate and creates a more cohesive, and I think overall better, final product.

This is the BASE oil used for myriad of household products I make. For example, you can add this directly to diffusers, dilute it with a carrier oil and use in a roller for immune-boosting help, add your thieves oil to homemade cleaning products, laundry detergent, spot cleaner and more.
